Mathematics helps develop the students’ intellectual competence, providing strong grounding in Science and Technology, thereby producing a competitive workforce. It is also valuable in everyday living and gives enjoyment and excitement when students managed to crack a difficult numerical puzzle.

Mathematics education helps students to develop process skills, problem solving skills, logical reasoning skills, IT skills, creative skills, positive attitude to apply on other disciplines like science and technology and everyday life.

The five interrelated components in mathematics framework are, Concepts, Skills, Processes, Attitudes and Metacognition. Numbers, algebra, geometry, statistics, probability, and analysis are the different types of mathematical concepts. Mathematical skills cover procedural skills for numerical computation, algebraic simplification, 3D visualisation, data evaluation, measurement, mathematical tools, and approximation. Reasoning, communication, analytical skills and trial and error, and application and modelling are mathematical processes. The choice and use of problem-solving strategies is called Metacognition, or “thinking about thinking”. Attitudes refer to the affective aspects of mathematics learning such as beliefs, interest and enjoyment, appreciation, confidence, and perseverance in mathematical problem solving. Secondary English Learning Guidelines - Secondary 1 to GCE 'O' Level

Students will attain a good level of competence in English, in both speech and writing. Students should attain foundational skills, especially in grammar, spelling and basic pronunciation. Some will be highly proficient in English.

Language is a system with its own set of rules and conventions. It is a means of communicating meaning where cognitive and effective engagement and interaction are involved. The students should understand the purpose, audience, context and culture in which the communication takes place. This guides them in their language use. Students should practise English in a multilingual context.

Students will be able to listen, read and view critically and with accuracy. They will speak, write and represent in international acceptable English. They should be able to understand and use internationally acceptable English grammar and vocabulary. These are goals by the end of the secondary education. The goals of the Secondary Science are threefold. Firstly, it cultivates students’ perception of Science as a collective effort and a way of thinking rather than just a body of facts. Secondly, it engages students in Science-related issues. Some of these issues concern their lives, the society and the environment.
