Selected Learning Outcomes for Primary 3 Science Papers (2013)

A given diagram shows four different animals P, Q, R and S. All have six legs except Q which has eight legs. Students are supposed to identify with explanation which are insects and which are not. Based on the observations made of the animals given above, students are to complete the classification chart by filling in the boxes. In the chart, animals are grouped into those with wings and those without. Under these two main groups, animals are further classified into groups with more than 3 pair of legs (without wings) and more than 1 pair of wings (with wings).

Janna tested the hardness of four materials, W, X, Y and Z by using an iron nail to scratch them. She scratched each material the same number of times with the same amount of force and recorded her findings in a given table. The table shows W with deep scratches, X with no scratches, Y with light scratches and Z with very deep scratches. Students are required to arrange the materials by their hardness,  beginning with the hardest followed by the softer ones. If all the materials were transparent, which of the above materials, W, X, Y and Z should Janna choose to make part R of the spectacles shown in given diagram. In the diagram, the spectacle glass is labelled as Part R. Pupils are to explain how the choice of the material is helpful to the wearer.

Huili set up an experiment as shown in given diagram. She placed a bowl of water and two mice in a glass container covered with an air-tight lid. Students are asked to look at the situation and determine and explain what they think will happen to the mice after a day.

Study the classification chart given. The chart shows that animals are classified into three groups, namely fish, bird and mammal. Fish comprises guppy, goldfish and swordtail. Bird consists of ostrich, bat and chicken while mammals refer to platypus, spiny anteater and monkey. Students are required to spot and explain which animal in the classification table above has been grouped wrongly. They are to state one difference in the physical characteristic between a fish and a mammal.

Tom was given a list of organism. The list comprises conifer, orchid plant, rose plant, fern, hibiscus plant and toadstool. He was given a plants classification chart to help him classify them as best as he could. Students should be able to help Tom complete the classification chart by filling in the boxes with the organisms in the list.

Steven did an experiment using two similar plants,  X and Y. He placed them in two glass jars of different sizes as shown in given diagram. Both glass jars had soil and were covered with air-tight lids but Plant Y was in a larger glass jar. He watered the plants before the jars were placed under a bright light.  After two weeks, he noticed that plant Y grew healthier than plant X.  Students are to explain the aim of Steven’s experiment and to suggest a reason for the difference in Steven’s observation of plants X and Y after two weeks.
